the journey continuesNext → WealthThe Mercator projection (1569) unrolls the round Earth onto a rectangle. To keep every compass bearing a straight line — priceless for navigation — it has to stretch the map more and more as you move away from the equator. At latitude φ the map inflates every length by 1 ÷ cos φ, and every area by the square of that. At Greenland's latitude (~72°) that's a ~10× area exaggeration; at the equator, none.
When you drag a country, we rescale its outline to the size it would be drawn at the latitude under your cursor. Slide it to the equator and you see its true footprint; slide it north and Mercator bloats it again. The country never changes — only the map's honesty does. The globe view (orthographic) shows every land roughly true-to-size at once.
The same illusion warps how we read elections. A US map shaded by which party won each state is a map of acreage, and rural states are big and empty. Switch on Land ≠ votes to compare the red-vs-blue land area against the actual split of people and electoral votes — three very different pictures of the same result.
